Looking for a book you can sink your teeth into? Look no further than Brock Enloe’s A Bat Among Bruins. But be warned—you’ll be on the edge of your seat until the last page. Keep reading to learn more about the author’s inspiration, his publishing journey, and what he has up his sleeve next for readers.
Let’s start out learning about you. Who is Brock Enloe?
I am a 27-year-old kid who loves adventure. In my free time, my wife and I love to trout fish and just hop in the Tacoma and go off on grand adventures. But like everyone else, I have a job and can’t always just up and go when I want, so I decided that I would bring the adventures home. I write to bring the feelings of wonder, awe, and excitement to my wife and I until we can actually hit the road and go on an actual journey!
Tell us a bit about A Bat Among Bruins. What is it about and what inspired you to write your book?
A Bat Among Bruins is an adventure/horror story set in the late 80s. It follows John Daggon as his family moves to a new town. It doesn’t take long for him and his brother to realize this town is different. After John is attacked by a mountain bat creature, he and his friends must learn more about the being, all before John becomes a creature of the night himself.
I love the 1980s and grew up on movies like The Goonies, Karate Kid, and The Lost Boys. The coolest part of these movies was the bond that all these young kids had all while trying to defeat “the evil.” Everyone can relate to movies like these because we were all kids once. In my book, I try to bring this nostalgic vibe and have people compare their friend groups growing up to the characters in the story.
Who is your target audience, and what do you hope readers get out of your book?
My target audience is classified as teenagers to young adults, but I would go as far as saying it is for anyone who loves adventure and remembers what it was like to be kids playing outside and letting your imagination run free.
I hope readers get that nostalgic feeling and remember that just because we are growing up and taking on more responsibility, it doesn’t mean you have to give up that childhood sense of wonder, playfulness, and imagination.
The cover is killer! What was your vision for the cover, and how well do you feel your cover artist (Chris Fowler) hit the mark? How was the process of working with him?
The cover is absolutely killer, and it was a pleasure working with Chris Fowler! I gave a brief idea of what I wanted the cover to look like, and he surpassed my imagination. I wanted a cover that resembled and paid tribute to my favorite books growing up, The Hardy Boys, and it does just that. The process was simple and went very smoothly. I would say Christ hit the bullseye with this cover.
Now that your book is published, how will you measure whether it’s a success? What is your goal for your story?
The book is already a success to me, because it is out of my head and on paper now (and hardback, ha-ha). I can’t thank Argyle Fox Publishing enough for helping me with this dream of mine. Obviously, I would love to sell millions of copies and become a best-seller and see my story turned into a movie or tv series, but the goal of my story is for people to read it and have that childhood spark come alive inside each and every one of them. Life is hectic and become so stressful, and I want my book to be an adventure where people can escape the real world until they are able to seek out an adventure in their real lives.
What are you doing to market your book and let folks know it is available?
I have been posting like crazy on all social media platforms. I made an account on Instagram for John Daggon, the main character of this story. I have several events I am participating in coming up. I’m speaking at the Dayton, TN, library, the Bookery Fair in Cleveland, TN, and I am dropping off copies to different libraries as I travel just to get the story out there.
What feedback have you received so far on your book?
I have received amazing feedback already. Everyone says they LOVE the book and that they couldn’t put it down. They usually ask when they can expect to see the sequel, so I’ve got some writing to do!
What would you say to other authors who have a story up their sleeve or on their computer that they’re considering publishing?
Publish it. Share it with the world. If it meant enough to you that you took the time to map a story out, type it up, and put so much heart into it, the world deserves to hear it. Your story may not be for everyone, but I can promise you that there is someone out there waiting to hear it. So, chase your dreams and publish it!
Talk about how you found Argyle Fox Publishing and why you felt we were the right publisher for you.
I had a friend recommend Argyle Fox Publishing. After viewing their website, I knew this was the company I wanted to help me with my dream. And then after talking with Daniel, I knew I had made the right choice. And if Daniel will have me back, I plan to publish the sequel through Argyle Fox Publishing as well!
What do you know about the publishing process now that you wish you knew before? Was anything surprising to you along your publishing journey?
I was shocked at the publishing process being a whole lot easier than I imagined it would be. I am certain that is because of the amazing work that Daniel and Argyle Fox Publishing do to make the author’s job easier. As I approached writing the end of my book, my mind naturally began to wonder and worry about how to publish and who to publish through, but again—as soon as I talked with Daniel, my worries went away.
Do you have another book up your sleeve? If so, can you give us a sneak preview of what it’s about and when you plan to present it to the world?
I can’t give too much away because I don’t want to spoil the book, and I am not quite sure of the direction I am going to take book number two. However, it is a sequel to A Bat Among Bruins. I hope to have it out within a year of the first book release date, so January 20, 2027.
Where can readers find you online?
