Scientists love sharing their knowledge. Panayotta Delinois Roberts is no exception. She created her picture book, The ABCs of the Laboratory, to encourage young readers to consider science-related careers. Keep reading to learn more about this science-loving author.
First, let’s learn a bit about you. Who is Panayotta Delinois Roberts?
I am a mom, wife, and scientist, and I’m obsessed with volleyball.
Tell us a bit about The ABCs of the Laboratory. What is it about and what inspired you to write your book?
My book is an introduction to science, through the lab, for young kids. I am the only one on my mom’s side of the family with boys, and when I started looking around, most of the books I saw for brown boys were sports themed. I want my boys and others who look like them to see different options they can be interested in.
How did you find Argyle Fox Publishing, and what convinced you that we were the right publisher for you?
A fellow author and friend (Dr. Charnetta Williams) recommended.
Who is your target audience, and what do you hope readers get out of your book?
I wrote my book for two- to eight-year-olds. I want readers to be curious, ask big questions, and be excited about science.
Riski Wahyuningsih created such cute illustrations for your book. How do you feel her art matched your vision, and how was the process of working with her?
I think she did a wonderful job. Her illustrations are very colorful, and I feel they’re very engaging for younger kids. It was a breeze working with her.
Now that your book has been released, how will you measure whether it’s a success? What is your goal for your story?
My goal is to introduce kids, especially black and brown boys and girls, to the world of science before they get to middle school and spark a lifelong interest.
What are you doing to market your book and let folks know it is available?
I have a website, and I post about my book on Instagram and LinkedIn. I’m also planning a book launch on November 8, which is International STEM Day.
What feedback have you received so far on your book?
Readers have told me, “I love it!” Several people have mentioned that it is indeed uncommon to see brown boys without a basketball or football in their hands. So, this is different.
What did you learn about the publishing process that surprised you?
I was amazed at how much of the profit Amazon takes and how expensive it is.
What would you say to other scientists and writers who have a picture book idea but aren’t sure if it’s worth publishing?
Talk to other authors, folks in the community, and join community forums. Find out about people’s experiences to help make the best decision.
Do you have other stories you’re working on right now? If so, can you give us a sneak preview of what’s next and when you plan to present it to the world?
Yes, I’m hoping the next will be delving deeper into the world of science. I would like my cousin, a professional illustrator, to illustrate it. So, I may need to wait two years (that’s how long it takes him per project).
