This first-time author’s debut picture book, Dakariland, is a wonderful reminder of the power of friendship. Let’s get started learning about you. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Dominique Thompson, proud mother of one who loves all things pertaining to early childhood education, traveling, fitness, outdoor activities, and music. I have a BS and MA in Early Childhood Education. I’ve taught pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade for over ten years. I’m currently a home daycare provider at Dakariland Home Daycare. I’ve also been a Delta flight attendant for four years. Any chance to soak in some sun sounds fun to me!

Now, let’s talk about your book. What is Dakariland about and what inspired you to write it?

My son, Dakari (Joyful) Malik (King) Thompson, is my inspiration for writing the book. He has brought so much joy to the family. Writing a story that motivates and illustrates his pure spirit was the goal.

How did you find Argyle Fox Publishing, and what convinced you that we were the right publisher for you?

I spoke with the author of the Charlotte the Shark series, Catherine Tally, about her process and was sold! Catherine and I met through her husband, as he and I became friends in college. To support Catherine, I purchased copies of her first book. Then I created a scratch-off game for my son’s first birthday, and the winner won a copy of her book. Everyone was so impressed with the quality of the book and with the fact that the actual author was present!

Catherine’s sound advice, paired with the super easy, outlined process, convinced me that Argyle Fox Publishing was the right fit.

Who is your target audience, and what do you hope readers get out of your book?

My target audience is children who enjoy a cute story with a catchy tune, educators who teach moral concepts through literature, and families seeking an uplifting story to share.

The illustrations your artist, Chris Fowler, created for your book are so cute! How was the process of working with him and how well does his art match your vision?

The process was very smooth. Once I was able to fully verbalize my thoughts, he translated my thoughts into the perfect illustrations.

Now that your book is published, how will you measure whether it’s a success? What is your goal for your story?

My goal is to gather a following that will show a need to create a series! This may be a bit ambitious, but the world needs more motivational books with diverse characters.

What are you doing to market your book and let folks know it is available?

I’m hosting a book signing on October 18 in Chicago. I’ve also been pushing the book on my social media platforms and my website.

What feedback have you received so far on your book?

I’ve received feedback that the illustrations are super adorable. Readers have loved that the story is uplifting and fun. I’ve also been told that the incorporation of the names’ meanings was super cute for moms who are intentional when naming their children.

What did you learn about the publishing process that surprised you?

The process can be super easy and smooth when you have the right publishing company.

What would you say to other children’s book writers who have a story but aren’t sure if it’s worth publishing?

Take a leap! Create!

Do you plan to publish other books? If so, can you give us a sneak preview of the next story bouncing around in your head?

I would love to publish a series of books centered around adventures with Dakari and friends learning skills, such as math, reading, directions, etc.

Where can readers find you online? (This can be a website/social media, etc.)

They can find me at Dakariland.com or Instagram.

Thanks so much, and here’s to success!
