Australian author Tracy Blanchard holds her picture book, Mitch Tames the Fire Within.

Do you know a child who has a hard time dealing with anger? So does Tracy Blanchard. That’s why the Australian resident penned her first picture book, Mitch Tames the Fire Within. Get to know her and what she hopes her book can do for the children in your life.

Let’s get started by learning about you. Who is Tracy Blanchard?

I am a registered psychologist and educator (and now author) living in Townsville–Queensland, Australia. I grew up in Singapore. Due to my father’s job, I moved to Townsville when I was eighteen for university and never left!

Tell us a bit about Mitch Tames the Fire Within. What is it about, what inspired the story, and what makes you the perfect author for this book?

Throughout my career as both an educator and psychologist, I’ve worked with many children who struggle to regulate big emotions—especially anger and frustration. My own son has faced similar challenges, and he loves soccer. This inspired me to get creative and find a way to communicate evidence-based emotional regulation strategies through something children can genuinely relate to.

Your publishing journey with Argyle Fox Publishing came courtesy of another one of our authors. Talk about how you found Argyle Fox Publishing and why you felt we were the right publisher for you.

I had always dreamed of writing a children’s book but never felt I had the right inspiration, time, or understanding of how to begin—especially when it came to publishing. After joining some wonderful networking groups, I kept hearing glowing recommendations about Argyle Fox Publishing. I submitted my manuscript and soon met with Daniel over Zoom. He answered all my questions about the publishing process and what to expect on this journey as an aspiring author. And now, here I am—with a published book and a long-held dream come true.

Who is your target audience, and what do you hope readers get out of your book?

My target audience is primary-aged children, roughly six to eleven years old. I hope that as they engage with this book, they can recognize the sensations and feelings Mitch experiences when his big emotions begin to take over. I also hope they can connect with the strategies shown—many of which they may already use in their favorite sports—and see how these same tools can help them manage big emotions in everyday life. In this way, the book aims to normalize that everyone experiences intense feelings and that there are simple, practical ways to cope.

Rodrigo Paulo illustrated your book. How was working with him, and how do you feel he captured your vision for the book?

Rodrigo did a wonderful job with the illustrations. He brought my vision of the characters to life, and his attention to detail—especially in showing Mitch escalating and calming throughout the story—beautifully captured the emotional shifts in Mitch’s journey.

Now that your book is published, how will you measure whether it’s a success? What is your goal for your book?

I’d love for this book to find a home in schools and therapy rooms, supporting conversations about big emotions and offering children strategies that are both practical and perfectly suited to their age.

What are you doing to market your book and let folks know it’s available?

I’ve been sharing my book on social media and contacting local primary schools and bookstores to offer readings and signings. As I continue learning the best ways to promote my work, I’ve been networking with other new authors for inspiration and guidance. I’ve also just launched my author website, created with the Tertulia Author Website Builder.

What feedback have you received so far on your book?

Those who have reached out after reading my book have provided very positive feedback which has been great to hear.

What do you now know about book publishing that you wish you knew before getting started?

One of the biggest barriers to starting my book was the overwhelm of everything that comes after finishing a manuscript. Partnering with Argyle Fox Publishing made all the difference. Instead of feeling like every step was solely my responsibility, I felt supported, guided, and part of a team.

What would you say to other authors who have a great story they aren’t sure how to get it out of their head and if they should publish?

My advice to aspiring authors is to just start writing. Don’t let the “What ifs?” or “Should I?” questions hold you back. If you have a story to share, just start writing—each small step builds momentum and brings your book closer to life.

Do you have another book up your sleeve? If so, can you give us a sneak preview of what it’s about and when you plan to present it to the world?

I love Mitch. He’s a mix of the many people who’ve shaped my life and work. I’m eager to write about his next brave adventure, and although ideas are already forming, I’d be thrilled to hear readers’ suggestions as well.

Where can readers find you online?

I now can be found on my website, tracyjblanchard.com, as well as Facebook and Instagram.

Is there anything else the world should know about you or your writing?

I think this is just the start of my writing journey!

Thanks so much, and here’s to success!
