A published author of two nonfiction books, Sara Jane Briggs decided to try something new. This time, she put her hand to the task of writing a children’s book. Keep reading to learn about her sweet story and the success it has already enjoyed.

Let’s get started learning about you. Who is Sara Jane Briggs?

I am a wife, mom, nana, sibling to six, and a trusted friend. I sponsor a cancer support group guiding women through the emotional journey of cancer. I guess the list of “who I am” could continue, but the only important truth is all these relationships are built on my relationship with God. I’m just an ordinary woman of faith striving to do whatever He ask me to do.

Tell us a bit about Sam and the Superpowered Pencil from Outer Space. What is it about and what inspired you to write your book?

Sam is in third grade. He has a hard time reading and writing on grade level. Perhaps the more difficult task is the teasing he receives from his classmates.

Words matter. They build us up or bring us down. Sam has come to believe those words. He tells himself he isn’t as smart as his classmates.

As a mom and a retired teacher, Sam represents many students I’ve taught. I always strive to teach students the importance of developing the characteristics of kindness.

Who is your target audience, and what do you hope readers get out of your book?

The target audience is kindergarten through fifth grade. However, this story about the power of our words is ageless and for us all.

While sharing this story in the elementary classroom, I always tell them I’m seventy-six years old (they love that) and that I’m still working to say and do only that which brings encouragement to others.

The illustrations Admiral Sya created for your book are so fun and lively. How do you feel he captured your vision for your book, and how was the process of working with him?

I’m very pleased with the creative work of the illustrator, Admiral Sya. He captured my thoughts through his art design. He was able to make any changes that I requested. I highly recommend him to other authors.

Now that your book is published, how will you measure whether it’s a success? What is your goal for your story?

I have been able to share this book in several school systems. The measure of its success has been and will be the response of the children. Although they enjoyed meeting the author, the true measure was their understanding of the power of words.

What are you doing to market your book and let folks know it is available?

I will continue to accept invitations to classrooms as well as story time in libraries. After sharing in the classrooms, I donated a book to the school library. Social media has also been an avenue to share where and how to order the book.

What feedback have you received so far on your book?

The feedback has been very positive.

Your previous books were written for an adult audience and were explicitly Christian in nature. While this has a clear Christian message, it is quite a departure from the other books you’ve published. Why did you feel the time was right to jump into the world of children’s literature?

I decided to write this children’s book as I began to sense a greater need for compassion and empathy. Using Sam as a classroom peer was one way to help achieve the goal.

How was this publishing experience different, and do you suspect you’ll do it again?

Argyle Fox Publishing has been an immeasurable guide of wisdom and knowledge. I received the same wealthy of assistance in publishing all three books.

What would you say to other children’s book writers who have a story they’re considering publishing?

I encourage other authors to consider publishing their books. Children are in great need of inspiring stories outside of the classroom curriculum.

Do you have another book up your sleeve? If so, can you give us a sneak preview of what it’s about and when you plan to present it to the world?

I do not have a book that I’m currently considering. However, inspiration is all around.

Where can readers find you online?

All three of my books are available to order through websites such as Amazon or through me personally. You can also find me on Facebook and other social media platforms.

Is there anything else the world should know about you or your writing?

I can’t think of anything else the world would want to know expect what a great man of God you are, Daniel.

Thanks so much, and here’s to success!
